Towards a new museum – the histories of the Museum of Finnish Architecture and the Design Museum on display at the Design Museum in Helsinki
A small exhibit has opened at the Design Museum, providing background to the new architecture and design museum project by shedding light on the history of both museums. Both the Museum of Finnish Architecture and the Design Museum are among the oldest specialised museums in their fields in the world. Throughout their history, the museums have been in a state of flux, and now a brand new museum is being planned in Finland.
History presented through individual objects
Over the years, the collections of both museums have grown to be one of a kind. The exhibit features individual objects that illustrate the different aspects of the museums’ work – past and present – and show how the role of the museum has changed over the decades.
What should be included in the collections of the new architecture and design museum?
In the exhibit, visitors are invited to imagine what kinds of things the collections of the museum of the future could include. It offers visitors the opportunity to contribute ideas for the new architecture and design museum’s collection and encourages to think about what the collections should include.
The exhibition is currently on display on the first floor of the Design Museum in connection with the collection exhibition Utopia Now.
